This substantial Civil War reference documents the role of New York regiments at Gettysburg and includes the battlefield maps. Volume I bears a presentation inscription: “Compliments of William E. Wheeler, Member of Assembly, 1900.” An attractive and historically significant set for collectors of Gettysburg, New York history, or Civil War regimental material.

What makes this set unique:
Volume I includes a period “Compliments of William E. Wheeler, Member of Assembly, 1900” stamp from Wheeler’s office. Wheeler was a Western New York businessman and Republican Assemblyman from Portville, Cattaraugus County. Because New York at Gettysburg was an official New York publication, the Wheeler stamp gives this particular set a direct connection to New York state government at the time of publication. It is a nice example of how these important historical works were distributed through public officials, and it gives this set its own identifiable provenance.
